The Content team recently got crafty in Salt Lake City with SNAP! attendees. We taught an affiliate marketing class to standing-room-only crowd and recieved great feedback about our new tools and solutions.
All variety of creative makers (DIY, paper and fabric crafting, interior design, cooking, and more) participated in a variety of activities, sharing ideas and best practices for monetizing their unique content. How-to videos and step-by-step instructions run rampant on sites targeting individuals focused on honing their artisan skills, and the sense of camaraderie and community is clear.
These bloggers, designers, and do-it-yourself-ers frequently create content supporting or relating to their own businesses, and many of their followers are loyal customers who trust the nature of a post from someone who has actually completed a project or experimented with a new technique or product.
Affiliate is an emerging concept in this vertical – while display banners are still fairly common, many attendees expressed excitement in learning about how affiliate links may be incorporated to support a complete user experience. Product Widgets received resounding praise, and the Deep Link/Product Link generator was like a breath of fresh air.
Native advertising is key – providing text links within a supply list or following a how-to video are the preferences of writers looking to transparently provide trusted product recommendations without alienating or overwhelming loyal visitors.
