Your Shopify Orders Don’t End at Checkout. Your Tracking Shouldn’t Either.

A sale isn’t final when the customer clicks “buy.” It’s final after the exchange window closes; the partial refund clears, and the order that shipped as three items settles as two.

U.S. retail returns topped $850 billion in 2025. For advertisers running affiliate programs, that’s not just a retail statistic. It’s a tracking problem. Every cancellation, return, and restatement that happens after checkout is a gap between what your reporting says and what your business actually earned.

If your store runs on Shopify with the CJ plugin, closing that gap now takes less than a minute. Here’s what Automated Order Corrections does, and how to turn it on.

The Manual
Corrections Problem

Until recently, the CJ Shopify plugin tracked conversions up to the point of a successful order. Anything that happened after, whether a cancellation, a return, or a restatement, had to be corrected manually: pulling the data, building a corrections file, submitting it, and reconciling the difference.

That manual step is where things slip. Corrections get batched late or missed entirely. Commissions get paid on order values that no longer exist. Finance teams burn hours reconciling numbers that should have matched in the first place. And publishers see discrepancies that erode trust in the partnership, which is the last thing you want from the channel built on it.

What Automated Order
Corrections Does

With the feature enabled, the plugin handles the full order lifecycle on its own. When an order is cancelled, returned, or adjusted in Shopify, the plugin detects the event, rebuilds the order with all relevant changes, and submits the revised data directly to CJ’s tracking system. Commissions are recalculated automatically to reflect the final transaction state.

No corrections files. No batch uploads. No manual intervention.

What that means in practice:

  • Accurate commission tracking: payouts align with actual order value, not the value at checkout
  • Less reconciliation work: post-purchase adjustments flow through automatically, so your finance team isn’t chasing them
  • Fewer publisher discrepancies: partners see fair, timely adjustments, which builds long-term trust instead of disputes

Most platforms still rely on manual reversal uploads or dashboard edits for corrections. Fully automated, lifecycle-based correction processing puts your program’s reporting on the same footing as enterprise-grade tracking, with zero ongoing effort on your side.

How to Enable It

The feature is opt-in, and setup happens entirely in Shopify. Nothing changes in your CJ account.

  1. Log in to Shopify Admin
  2. Go to Apps → CJ Network Integration
  3. Find Automated Order Corrections
  4. Select it, and save

That’s it. From that point on, cancellations and returns processed in Shopify flow directly into CJ.

One thing to know: the feature covers corrections made in Shopify after activation. Adjustments made outside Shopify, or on orders corrected before you enabled the feature, still need to be handled manually. That’s one more reason to turn it on sooner rather than later.

What to Do Now

If your store is on Shopify with the CJ plugin installed, enable Automated Order Corrections today. The setup takes less time than reading this article did. If you’re on Shopify but not yet using the CJ plugin, this is a good reason to upgrade your integration.
